HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 460 ELUTION FILE NO. l� Resolution RESOLUTION ON CONCORDE SERVICE AT THE DALLAS/FORT WORTH REGIONAL AIRPORT WHEREAS, the City of Fort Worth was primarily instrumental in convincing the U. S. Civil Aeronautics Board of the merits of esta- blishing a regional airport for the Dallas-Fort Worth area; and (>> WHEREAS, the City of Fort Worth entered into an agreement with the City of Dallas to construct the Dallas/Fort Worth Regional Airport to serve the air transportation needs of citizens in the two cities and the region; and WHEREAS, the City of Fort Worth has a direct financial respon- sibility for $160,055,000 in joint general revenue bonds which were issued to construct the Dallas/Fort Worth Regional Airport in the event that revenues generated from the use of the air facility fail; and WHEREAS, the City of Fort Worth has direct financial responsi- bility for their general obligation tax supported bonds and warrants which were issued to purchase over 17,500 acres of land for the regional airport; and WHEREAS, because of this financial interest and the interest the city has in securing the best and widest array of air transportation services for its citizens, the city go✓ernment is supportive of additional routes to and from the Dallas/Fort Worth Regional Airport; and WHEREAS, the Dallas/Fort Worth Regional Airport was designed and constructed to accommodate future generations of aircraft, including supersonic transports; and WHEREAS, the Dallas/Fort Worth Regional Airport is the most environmentally sound airport in the United States and has an adequate land buffer to reduce the invonvenience associated with aircraft operations; and WHEREAS, Braniff Airways has entered into an interchange service agreement with British Airways and Air France which would provide the citizens of Fort Worth with service six days per week to the alternate cities of London, England and Paris, France using Concorde equipment; and WHEREAS, the Dallas/Fort Worth Regional Airport has been in the past and will continue to be in the future a major economic impetus for growth and development in Fort Worth; and O 'rLJ— V1"_J CM OF roul woffm 1� Resolution continued Page 2 f� WHEREAS, the Concorde service being proposed will bring Fort Worth much closer to Europe in terms of travel time and will therefore be a stimulus to European investment in Fort Worth thereby creating additional employment opportunities for citizens and financial improvement to the city; and WHEREAS, Con OC rdevservice will bring further worldwide recognition and identity to Fort Worth and present the city as receptive to future technological advances; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS: That the Fort Worth City Council strongly supports direct non-stop air service from the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport to London and Paris at the .r earliest possible time; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That the Fort Worth City Council supports daily Concorde SST service via Washington, D. C. provided that said service is a supplement to and not an alternative for direct non-stop service to Europe. L'rj C ' OF room WO
