It is proposed that the City Council authorize a waiver of all temporary street closure encroachment fees
related to the Trinity Habitat for Humanity Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter Work Project, a World Habitat
Day Event, from October 4- 12, 2014.
DISCUSSION:
Habitat for Humanity, a 501(3) (c), was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller, to build quality,
affordable homes and has served over 2.5 million people worldwide. Trinity Habitat for Humanity, Inc.
was founded in 1989 as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, serving Fort Worth and
Tarrant County. Today Trinity Habitat for Humanity is ranked #20 out of 1,571 Habitat affiliates in the
nation in new home production and is a valued partner to the City of Fort Worth in providing quality
affordable homes.
Since the mid-1980's former President Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, have given a week of their time to
help Habitat for Humanity improve and build homes throughout the world. The Jimmy & Rosalynn
Carter Work Project helps raise awareness for the critical need for simple, decent and affordable
housing. In 2014, former President Carter and his wife will focus their efforts in Fort Worth during the
week of October 5th— I Ith.
The fee waivers requested for the closure of the public streets will serve the public purpose of assuring
the public safety of former President Carter and his wife as well as the volunteers participating in the
event and helping to facilitate Trinity Habitat for Humanity in a common mission it has with the City to
provide quality affordable homes. All temporary street closures will be in compliance with the
permitting processes outlined in the City Code, which put in place adequate controls to carry out such
public purpose.
The City agrees to waive fees in connection with the temporary encroachments for sections of Greenlee
Street, Van Natta Lane and Emily Street from October 4-12, 2014 for the Carter Work Project. The
estimated value of the fee waivers is approximately $8,000.
