HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 5430-10-2020 AResolution NO. 5430-10-2020 AUTHORIZING THE HONORARY DESIGNATION OF A PORTION OF EAST ALLEN AVENUE/EAST MADDOX AVENUE FROM IH-35W TO US 287 FOR ATATIANA JEFFERSON WHEREAS Atatiana Koquice Jefferson, affectionally known as "Tay", was born on November 28, 1990; and WHEREAS Atatiana Jefferson graduated with a pre-med degree in Biology from Xavier University of Louisiana in 2014 and was working in pharmaceutical equipment sales; and WHEREAS Atatiana Jefferson was making plans to further her education in medicine in the City of Fort Worth so that she could give back to her community, but tragically died on October 12,2019;and WHEREAS the City and the community, in honor of Atatiana's memory, have engaged in meaningful discussions and reflections about race and its effect on different relationships among groups in Fort Worth; and WHEREAS these discussions have reinforced the commitment of the City and community to implement the recommendations of the Task Force on Race and Culture, and continued efforts are being made to address disparities in criminal justice, economic development, education, governance,housing, and health; and WHEREAS the City of Fort Worth wishes to honor Atatiana Jefferson by designating a portion of East Allen Avenue/East Maddox Avenue from IH-35W to US 287, as depicted on the attached map, in honor of her memory. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS, THAT: A portion of East Allen Avenue/East Maddox Avenue from IH-35W to US 287 be given an honorary designation in memory of Atatiana Jefferson using street sign toppers. The youngest of four siblings, Ashley, Adarius, and Amber, Tay was a tomboy at heart who love climbing trees, exploring the great outdoors and video games. A studious, lifelong learner with an IG unquenchable thirst for knowledge, Tay was an avid reader and accomplished student, consistently „ earning recognition for academic achievements. Atatiana graduated from Lake Highlands High School in Dallas Texas in 2010. She continued her ed cati°onai Pursuits at wavier University of Leu1;!'aria, where S'ne ;e(;`r edaa Bachelor of Sklence :? Degree in Biology. Atatiana was a born nurturer who knew medicine was her calling and helped her mother and sister with their medical illnesses. She expressed the desire to make permanent plans in Fort Worth so that she could eventually give back to her community. Given the legacy of Atatiana!efferson in the City of Fort Worth, the memorial designation and fee waivers are appropriate and serve a public purpose. If approved, the City's Transportation and Public Works Department will fabricate and install street sign toppers for the memorial designation, ensuring that the public purpose is carded out. LEGALITY: The Law Department,finds that this proposal is legal and within the authority of the City Council. FISCAL NOTE: The Director of Finance certifies that approval of this recommendation will have no material effect on City funds. , CITY MANAGER'S COMMENT: The City Manager has no objection to this proposal.
