SUPPORTING THE DESIGNATION OF A PORTION OF IH-35W WITHIN THE CITY
OF FORT WORTH CITY LIMITS FOR ATATIANA JEFFERSON
WHEREAS Atatiana Koquice Jefferson, (affectionately known as "Tay") was born on
November 28, 1990 and was a Fort Worth citizen; and
WHEREAS Atatiana Jefferson graduated with a pre-med degree in Biology from Xavier
University of Louisiana in 2014 and returned to Fort Worth to assist her family; and
WHEREAS Atatiana Jefferson was working in pharmaceutical equipment sales and
making plans to further her education in medicine in the City of Fort Worth so that she could give
back to her community; and
WHEREAS Atatiana Jefferson was tragically killed on October 12, 2019 during a police
encounter; and
WHEREAS City Staff and members of the Fort Worth community, in honor of Atatiana
Jefferson's memory, have engaged in meaningful discussions and reflections about race, equality
and equity,and police encounters and their impact on our City; and
WHEREAS these discussions have reinforced the commitment of the City and community
to address disparities in criminal justice, economic development, education, governance, housing
and health; and
WHEREAS the City of Fort Worth wishes to honor Atatiana Jefferson's life and legacy
by requesting that Texas Department of Transportation designate a portion of Interstate Highway
35W in the City of Fort Worth city limits for Atatiana Jefferson.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS, THAT:
The City Council, in memory of Atatiana Jefferson and the significance of her exemplary life
within the Fort Worth community,requests that the State of Texas designate a portion of Interstate
Highway 35W as it runs through the City of Fort Worth as the Atatiana Jefferson Freeway.
