REMOVING MR. MICHAEL STEELE AS A MEMBER
OF THE FORT WORTH HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION
WHEREAS the Fort Worth City Council on March 17, 2015, appointed Mr.
Michael Steele to a two-year term on the Fort Worth Human Relations
Commission upon favorable recommendations from the Human Relations
Commission itself and from the City Council's Legislative and Intergovernmental
Affairs Committee; and
WHEREAS the City Council on December 12, 2017, reappointed Mr. Steele
to a second two-year term on the Human Relations Commission; and
WHEREAS Mr. Steele's current term on the Human Relations Commission
is scheduled to expire on October 1, 2019; and
WHEREAS the City Council has recently become aware of voluminous
social media communications whereby Mr. Steele has willfully disparaged people
based upon their ethnicity, national origin, religion, transgender, and other
protected classifications; and
WHEREAS the City Council finds these communications to be inconsistent
with the City's values and with the Human Relations Commission's mission to
promote basic human rights and facilitate harmonious relationships among Fort
Worth's diverse population; and
WHEREAS the City Council finds Mr. Steele's communications to be so
egregious and unacceptable as to warrant his removal from the Human Relations
Commission; and
WHEREAS the Human Relations Commission in a special meeting on July
15, 2019, voted by a margin of 9-0 to recommend that the City Council remove
Mr. Steele, for cause, from the Commission;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS:
The City Council hereby removes Mr. Michael Steele as a member of the
Human Relations Commission.
