HomeMy WebLinkAboutCFW Census 2020 Complete Count CommitteeCity Council Work Session November 5, 2019 Why do we take the Census? •U.S. Constitution calls for a headcount every ten years of everyone residing in the 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Island Areas of the United States. •First Census was conducted in 1790. •Totals from the Census determine the number of seats each state has in the House of Representatives. This information is also used for redistricting for state and local governments. •$675 Billion is distributed to communities based on Census data. 2 How do we use Census data? •Distribute funding to tribal, state and local governments. •Redistrict of state legislative districts. •Forecast future transportation needs for all segments of the population. •Determine areas eligible for housing assistance and rehabilitation loans. •Assist federal, tribal, state and local governments in planning and implementing programs, services and emergency response. •Design facilities for people with disabilities, the elderly and children. •Redistrict for new City Council districts. 3 What information is collected? •Number of people at address •Any additional people living or staying there •Own or rent •Phone number •Information for each person living in the residence •Sex •Age •Race •Hispanic, Latino or Spanish origin 4 Keeping Census data confidential: •All responses to Census Bureau surveys and censuses are confidential and protected under Title 13 of the U.S. Code. •Personal information will never be shared with immigration enforcement agencies, law enforcement agencies or allow it to be used to determine eligibility for government benefits. •Results are reported in statistical format only. •Census workers swear a lifetime oath to protect respondent data. 5 Work done to date: -LUCA information to Census Bureau –March 2018 -Neighborhood Leaders list –February 2019 -City Council Proclamation –April 2019 -Neighborhood address canvassing –August 2019 -Complete Count Committee –first meeting Sept 23, 2019 -CCC Training –October 21, 2019 •Councilmembers Kelly Allen Gray and Carlos Flores chair the committee. •Community leaders to assist in outreach and participation of historically undercounted. •Increase awareness in the local community. •6 Subcommittees -Government, Education, Faith-Based, Media, Community-Based Organizations, Business Complete Count Committee Historically Undercounted •African-American •Asian •Hispanic & Latino •Transient/Mobile •Low Income •Children 8 9 Subcommittee Chairs •Media -Felicitas Cadena, Univision •Business –Rebecca Montgomery, FW Chamber •Government –Mattie Parker, City of Fort Worth •Community Organizations –Estella Williams, FW NAACP •Education –Karen Molinar, FWISD •Faith -based –Carlos Ramos, Refuge Church Fort Worth Housing Solutions Tarrant County Community Oversight United Way of Tarrant County JPS Tarrant County Homeless Coalition North Texas Community Foundation Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Univision Greater Fort Worth Area Realtors FWISD United Fort Worth FW Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Metropolitan Black Chamber of Commerce City of Fort Worth -Mayor/Council Visit Fort Worth Fort Worth NAACP Celebration Community Church Tarrant County Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Refuge Church Tarrant Area Food Bank Goodwill Trinity Metro Oncor FW Chamber of Commerce Mayor’s Committee on Persons with Disabilities.
