Artists' Narrative Description
Wildflower is a public artwork inspired by the annual bloom of brightly colored wildflowers along the Texan
interstate. The piece will be located at the Fort Worth East Regional Library and create a new identity for the library and
local community while simultaneously serving as a gateway to the city.
The East Regional Library building sits on a hill overlooking several major highways, an enormous freeway interchange,
and a vast neutral landscape. Our task was to bring attention to the building by elevating some aspect of its
surroundings. Because the initial experience would be from the seat of a car as it speeds along the highway and adjacent
feeder road, we sought to create a large collection of elements that would be appropriately scaled to the
landscape rather than a single piece. Finally, we wanted to find a way to add multiple perspectives to naturally draw the
eye and foster curiosity.
The sculpture is composed of brightly painted steel structural shapes rising from the ground. Like a field of wildflowers,
these verticals take on red, orange, and golden colors, in contrast to the neutral background of the site giving the
piece high visibility from a distance. Similar to how the local agrarian fields are seen from roadways, the individual pieces
are arranged to appear without an order from a distance but reveal a uniform structure as the driver approaches. It
is a grid with intention.
At the pedestrian scale, the piece encourages one to pause and explore. The curious who stop to visit the field of art find
an unexpected treasure inscribed on several pieces —literary quotes selected collaboratively with the local community.
