DISCUSSION:
The U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) is honoring five cities with grant awards for innovative projects to
create a new or add a significant addition to an existing garden or green space. These awards promote
and recognize mayoral leadership in the development of green spaces across the nation, and will be
presented at the 81st Winter meeting, January 17, 2013 through January 19, 2013, in Washington, DC.
This grant award program was created to help drive garden and green space development in cities across
the U.S. and is part of the a partnership between USCM and Scotts M i racle-G ro's GRO1000 garden and
green space program. The award is in the amount of $25,000.00, which includes $15,000.00 in cash and
$10,000.00 of in-kind products.
The Fort Worth Botanic Garden (FWBG) has applied for this grant to expand the Children's Vegetable
Garden (CVG) located within the 110 -acre FWBG. The expansion of the existing garden and orchard will
be an irrigated garden complete with a paved walkway, pavilion, playhouse, raised beds, water pump,
ground beds, and greenhouse. Children and adults will learn gardening techniques along with the benefits
of healthy eating. They will also see how vegetables and small fruits are grown. The CVG will serve as a
focal point for learning about nutrition and an active lifestyle.
The current education program offered at the CVG includes school tours which reached 2,138 students
during Fiscal Year 2012, 4th graders working the gardens in a semester-long project, and a high school
work-based learning project. This grant would allow the expansion of the number of students accessing
the garden with the Tarrant County Master Gardener Association volunteers. Additional classes could be
offered on nights and weekends to adults. There will be planned seasonal activities to encourage families
to learn about gardening and try fresh vegetables and fruits.
