LOG NAME: 36EXTRACTOR DONATION
SUBJECT
(ALL) Authorize the Acceptance of the Donation of Gear Cleaning Extractor Systems and Installations Valued at Approximately $96,000.00
from the Fort Worth Fire Service Resource Network to be Installed at Six Fire Stations
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Council authorize the City Manager to accept the donation of gear cleaning extractor systems and installations
valued at approximately $96,000.00 from the Fort Worth Fire Service Resource Network to be installed at six fire stations.
DISCUSSION:
The Fort Worth Fire Service Resource Network is a 501 c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting Fort Worth Firefighters in reducing
and treating cancer. They have generously offered the donation of six extractor systems and associated costs to install these at six fire stations.
This donation is valued at approximately $96,000.00 and will greatly benefit the Fire Department's cancer prevention efforts.
Extractors are used to remove carcinogens from firefighter's protective equipment. The Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) has
adopted the National Fire Protection Association guidance, NFPA 1851, as a state standard which regulates the cleaning process for structural
firefighting gear. The Fort Worth Fire Department currently has one extractor and requires that gear be sent in to a central location for advanced
cleaning two times per year to comply with state mandates. However, structural firefighting gear becomes contaminated after the first fire that
occurs post -cleaning. Firefighters are then exposed to carcinogens until the next cleaning. The Fort Worth Fire Department is an all hazards
response organization with exposure to carcinogens on a regular basis.
This donation will benefit ALL COUNCIL DISTRICTS.
