The design interlaces jazz music with Adinkra symbols featured in West African textile traditions. Their ideas are inspired by how the process of jazz music and weaving looms require careful coordination, movement, and rhythm, a similar function of a community. In the site context of a growing Rosedale neighborhood, Lyrical Strands is about the continuous weaving ofa community's social fabric and identity. The artwork will feature linear arrays of painted steel suggesting strands of fiber pulled through a loom , piano strings, and the striated quality of a musical staff. Painted with the colors traditionally associated with Adinkra cloth, these sculptural arrays meander and overlap each other across the underpass. Bands of color will be painted onto the concrete surfaces of the underpass to provide a backdrop to the sculptural arrays. Laser cut Adinkra symbols are also attached to the steel arrays. These sculptural arrays will be illuminated at ni ht.
