sus.cT ADOPTION OF A JOINT RESOLUTION AND AGREEMENT WITH THE C1TY OF
ALEDO TO APPORTION OVERLAPPING EXTRATERRITORIAL JURISDICTIN, TO
RELEASE LAND LOCATED IN THE EXTRATERRITORIAL JURISDICTION OF FORT
WORTH TO THE CITY OF ALEDO, AND Ta ACCEPT LAND RELEASED FROM THE
EXTRATERR1TORlAL ,7URISDICTION OF ALEDD
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Gauncil:
1. Approve th ttached Jaint Resolution and Agreement with the City of Afedo whereby the cities of
For Worth and Aledo apportion oerlapping extraterri#orial jurisdictifln, and Fort Worth releases land
lacated west and nvrthwest af Aledo from its extraterriiorial jurisd'rctian and accepts land on the east
boundary af Afedo released by Aledo from its extraterritorial urisdiction; and
2. Authorize the Mayor to execute the attached oin# Resalution and Agreement.
DISCUS5IQN:
The City of Aledo is a general law city located in Parer County west of Fort Worth and south of
Interstafe Highway 20. A[edo was creatd within fie miles f ort Worth's corporate limits befare the
Annexatian Act of 963. The adoption of #he Annexation Acfi crea#d oerlapping and shared
extraterritarial jurisdictians {ETJ) foetween Fort Worth and Aledo in the area one-half mile from Aledo's
corporate limits. Because Fort Warth's ETJ surrounds Aledo, Aleda's ETJ has not expanded beyand
th ore-half mile established by the Annexatian Act of 1963.
The Annexation Act authorizes cities that had oerlapping ET,]'s on August 23, 1963 to execute ar
agreement appartinnin the overlapping ETJ. In 1975, the cities of Fot Worth and Aledo negotiafed an
apportionment of the ETJ boundary. However, the two cities never executed fhe agreement.
In 994, For Warth released a portian of its TJ south af ihe Ado city limits to allow Aleo ta annex
property for the construction of a new schoal by te Aledo Independent School Disfrict.
The current ETJ bourdarEes of A1edo and Fort Worth are indicatd on the mp attached and marked as
Exhibit "A".
ln 20'1, a# the reqaest af the Aledo Independent 5chool District and property nwner Jm Bailey, Aledo
approached Fort Worth to discuss apporfionment of the cfties' ETJ in order ta manage the growth and
deuelopment of bat cities by the adoption of a Joinf Resolution.
If the Joint Resolution is approved by Fort Worth, Aleda will be releasing approximately 600 acres to
Fort Worth and Fort Worth will be releasing approximately ,687 acres o Aleo resulting in new ETJ
boundary lines between Aledo and Fart Warth.
