HomeMy WebLinkAboutIR 24-1821INFORMAL REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS No. 24-1821 pAT&A4 4 i { i7 Y rF rn 1075 To the Mayor and Members of the City Council April 2, 2024 Page 1 of 1 SUBJECT: FORT WORTH MUNICIPAL COURT JUDICIAL REAPPOINTMENT AND CHIEF JUDGE RECOMMENDATION The purpose of this Informal Report is to share with the Mayor and Council an update on the status of the recommendations for appointment of a new Chief Judge and reappointments of the current full-time judges. Background Fort Worth Municipal Court full-time Judges are appointed to two-year terms with the current terms expiring on March 31, 2024. Chapter 30 of the Texas Government Code sets out the requirements for the appointment of judges and the presiding judge and provides that the governing body shall determine the salary of a municipal judge: • Section 10-3 of the City of Fort Worth Code of Ordinances provides in pertinent part that: o Municipal court judges shall be selected and appointed or reappointed for a term of two years, commencing April 1 of even -numbered years. o The city council shall designate one of the municipal judges as chief judge and one of the municipal judges as deputy chief judge. Process Overview • Interviews for new Chief Judge were conducted on March 27t" and 28tn Recommendations from interview panel to go to the Legislative Affairs Committee on April 9, 2024. Recommendation of the Legislative Affairs Committee to be presented to the Mayor and City Council by M&C on April 23, 2024 to include the following: o Reappointment of nine (9) Municipal Court Full -Time Judges, o Chief Judge Appointment o Deputy Chief Judge Appointment For questions regarding this information, please contact Valerie Washington, Assistant City Manager at 817.392.6192.
