Subject: Status Report on Enforcement of False Burglar/Robbery Alarm
Ordinance
On February 14, 1984, the City Council passed an ordinance designed to reduce the
number of false burglar and robbery alarms at commercial locations within the
City of Fort Worth. The Police Department had been concerned for quite some time
with the high incidence of false burglar and robbery alarms in the city and its
resulting effect upon officer utilization.
While it is still too early to judge the effectiveness of the ordinance, there are
signs that the desired effect is taking place.
During the five months preceding the effective date of the ordinance
(December 1983 through April 1984) , false alarms increased by an
average of 413 per month when compared with the same period in the
previous year. However, in the five months since the effective date
of the ordinance (May 1984 through September 1984) , the rate of false
alarms has decreased to 32 additional false alarms per month when
compared to the same five month period in the previous year. (See
chart below. )
