HomeMy WebLinkAboutIR 7009 INFORMAL REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS No. 7009 ;.0170R2Z., To the Mayor and Members of the City Council March 12, 1985 Subject: CRIME LABORATORY EQUIPMENT AND STAFFING For the past year, the Police Department has been exploring ways to im- prove the quality and scope of services provided by the Crime Labora- tory. With an expanding and diversifying drug, serology, and physical evidence caseload, the need for improving service capability continues. Options pursued to provide funds for Crime Lab equipment include a grant request to the State Criminal Justice Division which was not approved and a 1984-85 budget request. In their initial 1984-85 budget request, the Police Department requested $128,000 for additional equipment and two additional Criminalist posi- tions. The City Manager recommended and the City Council approved $44,000 in additional funds for laboratory equipment and one additional position. The Police Department has continued its review of Crime Lab needs and has submitted to the City Manager's Office a phased plan for becoming one of the most advanced and equipped labs in the country." The plan includes: Phase I Phase I involves a proposed mid-year laboratory equipment purchase of $340,000 and the addition of two positions. The City Manager's staff will review the remainder of the proposal and submit a recommendation regarding funding and implementing this equip- ment and personnel request.
