NFORMAL REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS No.
fo To the Mayor and Members of the City Council October 22, 1985
Subject: PUBLIC SAFETY AND COURTS BUILDING RENOVATIONS
In 1939, the City of Fort Worth moved into a new City Hall and Police Station
at the corner of Tenth and Throckmorton Streets. The new facility was a PWA
project that provided Fort Worth with needed municipal facilities. Designed
by Elmer G. Withers and Wyatt C. Hedrick, the City Hall cost $500,000.
The City Council met in this building from January 4, 1939 until October 18,
1971, when the Council moved into the City's current municipal building.
Other City offices already had moved into the new building. From 1971 until
this summer, the PWA building, now known as the Public Safety and Courts
Building, was home to the Fort Worth Police Department, the Fire Department's
Administrative offices, and the Municipal Court operations. When the Police
Department relocated to its new headquarters earlier this year, the vacated
space was allocated to other City departments- that had outgrown their space
in the municipal building, or were inconveniently located in other facili-
ties.
Three departments, Housing and Human Services, Fire Administration and Muni-
cipal Courts, are currently located in the Public Safety and Courts
Building. The Human Relations Commission is scheduled to move into the
building November 1, 1985. Transportation and Public Works' Traffic Control
Management Center will also be located in the building in the near future.
Over the years, hard use by many City departments had caused. considerable
deterioration to the building and necessitated general restoration. Repair
and renovation of the building began last spring. In addition to the
contracting of some work, approximately 50 City employees were involved in
the renovation and remodeling of the building, including personnel from
Building Maintenance, Janitorial Services and Signs and Markings. Costs
associated with the renovation were $150,000. A breakdown of these costs is
provided below.
