SUBJECT: TARRANT COUNTY UPDATE
rare
Regarding the Tuesday, October 6, 2409 meeting of the Tarrant County Commissioners Court,
there were no action items that specifically referenced the City of Fort Worth. However, should
you wish to review the agenda you can access it at www.tarrantcoun+y.com and click on
COMMISSIONERS COURT AGENDA. The agenda for each Tuesday's meeting is posted Friday
of the previous week and can be reviewed at the same website.
Of specific interest was a briefing provided to the Commissioners Court by Lou Brewer, Director
of the Tarrant County Public Health Department (TCPH), and Dr. Sandra K. Parker. Director
Brewer reported that October 5, with no prior notice, Tarrant County received an initial small
supply of the H1 N1 vaccine. Dr. Parker then confirmed that 500 doses of the H1 N1 2009
monovalent vaccine in the LAIV (live attenuated influenza vaccine) form had been received by
Tarrant County. Judge Whitley asked if other community agencies had received an initial
shipment and Ms. Brewer responded that to the best of staffs knowledge, no other agency had
received any shipment. Dr. Parker continued, reporting that this supply is being distributed to JPS
Health Services, clinics and Cook Children's Provider Network for administration to children age
24-47 months and to health care workers that provide services to the pediatric population. Part of
this supply will also be administered to children in shelters. Dr. Parker also stated that persons to
receive the LAW must be healthy, with no underlying chronic medical conditions, and not be
pregnant. Nor can they work or live with a severely immunocompromised individual.
Dr. Parker further reported that TCPH does not know when it will receive any additional vaccine
nor what preparation will be received next. Tarrant County's initial order was for 25,000 doses but
the 500 doses received October 5 is not a part of that original order. As received, TCPH will be
administering the vaccine to the target groups first and then to the remainder of the community.
TCPH plans include working closely with community partners regarding vaccine administration,
as well as providing the H1 N1 2009 monovalent vaccine through the Public Health center,
temporary store front venues and community events.
The long-term plan calls for Tarrant County to order and receive additional doses, beyond the
initial 25,000 doses, as needed.
Finally, Director Brewer reported that per a conference call with the State of Texas yesterday,
future doses of the H1 N1 vaccine will come in small quantities at unpredictable times.
