SUBJECT: TARRANT COUNTY UPDATE

Of specific interest, at its October 13 meeting, the Commissioners Court approved the
appointment of Jim Austin, Tom Brown, John Molyneaux, Michael Glaspie and Joe Potthoff to the
Tarrant Appraisal District's Board of Directors. Austin and Brown are new appointments while
Molyneaux, Glaspie and Potthoff are reappointments. Also, the Court approved the 9-1-1
Emergency Assistance District's proposed budget for 2009-2010. The approved budget had been
revised to include no salary increases for 9-1-1 Emergency Assistance District staff. Should you

Tuesday's Commissioners Court meeting is posted Friday of the previous week and can be
viewed at the website indicated above.
Additionally, regarding the H1 N1 issue, a briefing was provided to the Commissioners Court by
Lou Brewer, Director of the Tarrant County Public Health Department (TCPH), and Dr. Sandra K.
Parker. The details of that briefing are as follows:
• There are 429 confirmed cases of H1 N1 in Tarrant County;
• In Tarrant County there has been 1 additional death confirmed to have been caused by
H1 N1 — this brings the Tarrant County death toll to 2;
• Several Back to School Immunization special events have been conducted — specifically,
last Wednesday, October 7, six hundred immunizations were given and on Saturday,
October 10, three hundred one immunizations were given;
• Tarrant County is still awaiting word from the Fort Worth ISD regarding how many are still
in need of immunizations;
• Last Friday, October 10, a drive through clinic was held for seasonal flu shots - 345 shots
were administered; and
• No new H1 N1 vaccine has been received since last week. Distribution of last weeks' 500
doses that were received is as follows:
* 200 doses to Cook Children's
0 200 doses to JPS Health Services of which 75 doses went to health care providers,
and
0 100 doses to children housed in area homeless shelters
In addition to the report from the Tarrant County Commissioners Court, regarding the H1 N1
issue, the following report, received from City staff, outlines the City of Fort Worih
communications effort that has been developed:

working group continues to develop an HI N1 employee vaccination plan in cooperation
with Concentra.
• Developed H1 N1 Frequently Asked Questions for employees and supervisors. These
questions will be distributed to employees via ACToday in English and Spanish.
(Supervisors and other administrative staff will be encouraged to print out this information
for employees without access to e-mail.)
• Included flu prevention information in the Better Health for Life newsletter
• Partnered with Tarrant County Public Health to have an informational booth at the
Employee Wellness Fair, October 22
External Communications
• Developed posters, fliers, bookmarks and door hangers in English and Spanish consistent
with Tarrant County Public Health's flu prevention message
o Posters will be distributed and posted at numerous city locations including all
libraries and community centers
o Fliers will be available for download on the city's Web site (www.FortWorthGov.org.)
o Bookmarks will be on hand at all libraries for patrons
o Door hangers will be disseminated by Code and Animal Control Officers
• Producing a flu prevention Public Service Announcement in English and Spanish to air on
the City's cable channel
• Sent flu prevention e-news messages to people subscribed to receive city news
• Posted a link to the Tarrant County Public Health's flu prevention information on the
homepage of the City's website
• Published articles on flu prevention in City News(four times since September 2) and City
Times (October and November issues) in English and Spanish.
