r SUBJECT: Temporary and Window Signs on Businesses
During 2007, a Sign Code Citizen Advisory Committee developed a proposed ordinance that
addressed, among other things, temporary signage and window signs on businesses. The
changes limited the display of temporary banner signs to no more than 30 days at a time with
mandatory breaks of 30 days. In addition, window signs were restricted to cover no more than
10% of the window area. The purpose of these amendments was to reduce visual clutter and
improve visibility into businesses for public safety.
In 2008, City staff distributed more than 2,500 brochures to property owners to inform them of the
standards. In addition, a long-term plan to conduct proactive education and enforcement was
established with a focus on the commercial corridors. In recent months, staff has been
implementing these compliance efforts on East Lancaster, Hulen and Camp Bowie.
Inspectors are distributing notices of violations of the code and working with property owners to
allow a reasonable amount of time to resolve the violations. Only one citation has been issued to
date due to non-responsiveness of a property owner on East Lancaster. All property owners are
able to file for a variance with the Board of Adjustment should they wish to keep their signs.
Please contact Susan Alanis if you wish to discuss further.
