HomeMy WebLinkAboutIR 9233 INFORMAL REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS No. 9233 `Tj To the Mayor and Members of the City Council APRIL 27, 2010 a 'Iee r Page 1 of 1 9�, a SUBJECT: UPDATE ON SWIMMING POOLS FOR THE 2010 SEASON ISIS The purpose of this report is to brief the City Council on the actions that the Parks and Community Services Department (PACSD) is taking to inform the public about the status of the Summer 2010 pool season. In accordance with the FY 2010 adopted budget six of the seven City of Fort Worth swimming pools will not open for the Summer 2010 season. Forest Park Pool, located near the center of the city will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Pool operations will begin Memorial Day weekend (May 29-31) and Tuesday through Sunday operations will begin Saturday, June 5, running through Sunday, August 15, 2010. Forest Park Pool will be open weekends through Labor Day. The PACSD has also negotiated a temporary agreement with the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth for use of four local YMCA pools. In consideration of the collaboration, the YMCA will be paid $7,000 to provide staff and lifeguards during the hours that the pools are open to the general public. The pools will be available daily during a period beginning June 5, 2010 and ending August 21, 2010 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission prices (which are similar to the City's) will be $1.00 for children and $1.50 for adults. The four pools that will be open to the public include: McDonald Community YMCA, 2400 East Berry, Fort Worth, Texas 76105 Eastside YMCA, 1500 Sandy Lane, Fort Worth, Texas 76112 E.R. Van Zandt Southwest YMCA, 4750 Barwick Drive, Fort Worth, Texas 76132 Westside YMCA, 8201 Calmont Avenue, Fort Worth, Texas 76116 To inform citizens about the closures and provide alternative locations for swimming, the PACSD, Community Relations Communication Office and YMCA staff have developed a communication plan. Elements of the plan include pool status, alternative locations for swimming, pool addresses and a contact phone number for frequently asked questions. The information in the plan will be placed on banners at each pool and broadcast through the City News (formerly City Page) article which appears in the Star-Telegram, La Estrella and La Vida, Neighborhood E- news, City website, updates to the Fort Worth Athletics/Aquatics website and a news release announcing the YMCA partnership will be disseminated to local print, television and radio outlets. PACSD staff is also working with "the 7 to develop information on bus routes to pools from different areas of the city. Information will be posted at the pools to provide neighborhoods with public transportation options to reach the Forest Park Pool and the four YMCA pools. This information will also be posted on the City website.
