Summary. Ft. Worth infant Death Study, 3981-1985
Rates of infant mortality are a sensitive indicator of health care
among the population, especially the poor. High infant mortality over the
past few years in Fort Worth prompted the Department of Public Health to
more closely examine the local situation.

Subject:
An intensive investigation was performed by reviewing the birth and
death records of all Fort Worth babies dying within the first year of life
between 1981-1985. The records of these infants (cases) were randomly
matched with records of surviving infants (controls) of the same race, age
of mother, and census tract.
In summary, how is Fort Worth's infant health unique?
o more infants have low birth weights (related to mortality)
o more mothers are in the younger age groups
o mothers tend to get less prenatal care; more receive no prenatal
care at all
o there seems to be a significant group of mothers who are margi-
nal to the health care system

agencies have primary and shared responsibility: Tarrant County Hospital
District, Fort Yorth Department of Public Health, Texas College of Osteo-
pathic !Medicine and others. The implications and future directions suggest-
ed by the IDS will include:
• continued monitoring of perinatal health*
• community focus on healthy mothers and babies
• coordination of antenatallperinatal care among all providers
(integrated system)
• enhanced outreach to nonclinic mothers*
• increased antenatal care to all indigent mothers*
o enhanced and accessible birth control education and methods to
women
• consideration of inpatient alternatives in antenatal care.
The role of the Department of Public Health will be principally in the areas
indicated (*).
These efforts continue the growing emphasis on maternal health in the
Department. Previous and current changes promoting maternal health are:
o availability of pregnancy testing at all clinics
o training and staffing of clinics with obstetrical-nurse practi-
tioners
o obstetrical consultation
o coordination with JPSmith Hospital OB Clinic
o enhanced family planning services as part of maternal health
o allocation of more nursing time to maternal health.
