Worth infant Death Study, 3981-1985 Rates of infant mortality are a sensitive indicator of health care among the population, especially the poor. High infant mortality over the past few years in Fort Worth prompted the Department of Public Health to more closely examine the local situation. The records of these infants (cases) were randomly matched with records of surviving infants (controls) of the same race, age of mother, and census tract. In summary, how is Fort Worth's infant health unique? o more infants have low birth weights (related to mortality) o more mothers are in the younger age groups o mothers tend to get less prenatal care; more receive no prenatal care at all o there seems to be a significant group of mothers who are margi- nal to the health care system ZMEGMTE POMTM. The implications and future directions suggest- ed by the IDS will include: • continued monitoring of perinatal health* • community focus on healthy mothers and babies • coordination of antenatallperinatal care among all providers (integrated system) • enhanced outreach to nonclinic mothers* • increased antenatal care to all indigent mothers* o enhanced and accessible birth control education and methods to women • consideration of inpatient alternatives in antenatal care. The role of the Department of Public Health will be principally in the areas indicated (*). These efforts continue the growing emphasis on maternal health in the Department. Previous and current changes promoting maternal health are: o availability of pregnancy testing at all clinics o training and staffing of clinics with obstetrical-nurse practi- tioners o obstetrical consultation o coordination with JPSmith Hospital OB Clinic o enhanced family planning services as part of maternal health o allocation of more nursing time to maternal health.
