This loss was covered under the City's self-insurance for fire and extended coverage program. The value of the building and contents was assessed at $42,000. In June 1984, the insurance money was transferred into the 1978 Capital Improvement Program account to enable the reconstruction or renovation of existing buildings to handle the displacement of this facility. Since the fire, a number of birds have been quartered in a modified old rides shelter located next to the flight cage constructed as part of the infant care/nursery complex. In the summer of 1987, the Park and Recreation Department retained the services -of Lassiter and Associates (the City's small projects architect) to compile plans and specifications to renovate the old rides shelter for protection from winter weather. The scope of the work will include remodeling of the roof system, skylights, exhaust fans, heating, and bringing this building into architectural conformance with other structures in this area. The total cost of this project is estimated at $18,000. The existing structure has a metal roof, with no insulation. This project will change the appearance of the structure to conform with other Zoo buildings nearby. Operational costs will be reduced due to the improved insulation and weatherization afforded by the new roof. Plans and specifications have been completed and are in final review by various City departments at this time. Once the review process is completed, advertisement and bidding, and contract construction will be implemented to insure these improvements are in place prior to the winter months. This proposal was reviewed by the Park and Recreation Advisory Board at its regular meeting on June 21 , 1988 and received favorable approval to proceed. Should you have any questions, additional information on this action will be provided. GLAS HARMAN _7CITY MANAGER ISSUED BY THE CITY MANAGER FORT WORTH, TEXAS
