To the Mayor and Members of the City Council Apri 1 5, 1988
Subject: LOW COST VACCINATION CLINICS
As a follow-up to Informal Report #7264, March 8, 1988, staff has met
with representatives of the local veterinary medical community to discuss
the mobile vaccination clinics in question. A number of related issues
were also brought into discussion.
The outline of an alternative means of low cost rabies vaccination was
presented. After close comparison of benefits and cost, and in respect
of the prior commitment on the part of the City's Public Health Department,
the following actions are proposed:
1 ) The Animobile Clinic will conduct rabies vaccination clinics for 1988
at the designated city facilities with Animal Control staff present
to sell city licenses;
2) Additional clinics be scheduled at locations designated by the Director
of Public Health. Local veterinarians would staff these clinics and
provide low cost vaccinations. Animal Control would sell city licenses
at these clinics;
3) Evaluate in advance alternative proposals to conduct City-supported
low cost vaccination clinics for 1989; and
4) Propose amendment to the ordinance to allow the sale of the city
licenses by local veterinary clinics. Additional amendments to the
ordinance with support of veterinarians will be recommended for Council
consideration at the time.
Unless otherwise directed by Council , staff will proceed with the
recommended actions.
