Members of these organizations represent the spectrum of public and private transportation providers and users. The purpose of the project is to develop transportation strategies to carry the nation into the next century. Since good transportation and Its supporting infrastructure are essential to the economic vitality of the region, it is important that the experiences and recommendations from Fort 'Worth be niade a part of the Texas report. The initial step of the project is a series of nationwide public hearings. The Texas hearings are scheduled for February; the Fort Worth/Dallas Metroplex hearing is February 9, 1988. The Texas State Department of Highways and Public Transportation has contacted area officials, including Mayor Bolen, urging that they present testimony at the hearings. The testimonies will be used to prepare a report concerning Texans' perceptions of the future transportation needs of Texans. An action plan will then be formulated for the United States Congress, Executive Branch and state agencies to develop long range transportation policies and programs that meet the needs of transportation providers and users. Since the Mayor has been asked to testify concerning the transportation needs of the City, the City Council is being asked to adopt the attached resolution supporting the concept of the Transportation 2020 project, its goals and the Mayor's testimony. The Fort Worth testimony Will support the following: a continued federal and state funding of infrastructure and transit projects; a increased dedicated, locally controlled share of federal and state motor fuel tax revenues; a increased ability to combine federal, state and local funds for local projects without the time-consuming federal and state constraints that currently exist; a continued and increased support from the state for transitway projects and Park & Ride reservations of land in conjunction with state highway projects; • continued improvements to state highways and roads; • continued state assistance in improvements of and additions to the arterial system; • continued state support for the Southwest Freeway project and other viable projects In developing areas of Fort Worth.
