HomeMy WebLinkAboutIR 7459 ` INFORMAL REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS NO. `7459 ' To the Mayor and Members of the Ck Council May 7, 7990 xr`' Subject: Community Service Workwa $Nis The following is provided to inform the City Council of the extent that City departments are using participants in various City and County programs to perform community service work. flgusi0g and Human Services Department Six to eight work release participants from the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office have been utilized on weekends in the multi-purpose centers to strip, scrape, and wax floors. Two regular custodial personnel work with these people and provide supervision. Because of limited resources, this is work that would otherwise not be able to be done. Solid Waste Management Division Six to eight work release participants from the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office have been utilized to collect litter and cleanup illegal dumping along city streets since July 1989. A regular Solid Waste Division supervisor picks up the work release participants at the County Jail and transports them to the work site where they are provided with garbage baits, gloves and any necessary hand tools. This is work that would not be able to be done without the work fph, release participants. Equipment Services Division Four to six work release participants from the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office have been used on Saturdays to perform maintenance work on a rotating basis at the various service centers. They have been used for grounds maintenance, facility cleaning and cleaning vehicles scheduled for auction. Supervision is provided by regularly scheduled ESD personnel . Transportation is provided by the City from the City/County Jail to the work site. Eark and Recreation Department One person from the Adult Probation Office has been used to pick up trash, water trees and cut weeds in the parks on Saturdays. This person has been supervised by a citizen volunteer in the Parks Department. Additionally, from June 1987 through March 12, 1990, 1757 hours of community service work have been performed by Teen Court participants at Log Cabin Village, Sycamore Recreation Center, Thomas Place Recreation Center, Riverside Recreation Center and Como Multipurpose Center. Library Department Teen Court participants have performed from June 1987 through March 12, 1990 3,002 hours of community service work at the Downtown, Southwest Region, tledgewood and Diamond Hill-Jarvis Libraries. 1p' ISSUED BY THE CITY MANAGER FORT WORTH, TEXAS INFORMAL REPORT TO CITY COl1NCIL MEMBERS No. 7459 `61 0 O To the Mayor and Members of the City Council xr� Subject: Community Service Markers Page 2 txs Police Department The Police Department regularly uses work release participants to do maintenance and cleanup work. cf. Fart Marth Mork_Release P asrIm From April 1, 1990 when the City's work release program was initiated through April 16, 1990, fourteen people representing 1,343 community service work hours have been referred by the Municipal Court to this program. Twelve people have been assigned to Park and Recreation Department, one person has been assigned to Equipment Services Division and one person has been assigned to the Office of Management Services. It is anticipated that this program will expand and as more referrals are made more departments will be using work release people.
