xrrX C, Subject: EROSION/FLQDD.UtG PROBLEMS ON MARY'S CREEK IN
RIDGLEA COUNTRY CLUB ESTATES
The City of Fort Worth has been a continuing participant in a U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers Feasibility Study of the Upper Trinity River Basin for several years.
As part of that study, in March of this year, an eighteen month report was
released which examined several flood control projects, including one along
Mary's Creek in southwest Fort Worth.
The project examined for Mary's Creek was a channelization project including the
modification of several bridges. The study concluded that the project, which
only provided a 25-50 year frequency protection, would have severe environmental
impacts and would cost $12.8 million for construction. Based on the benefits of
the project as studied, weighed against the cost, the project was not considered
for further study in the second phase of the Corps study.
Approximately three weeks ago individuals from the Ridglea Country Club Estates
area contacted the City staff and requested to be allowed to make a presentation
before City Council on October 2, 1990. Previously, Roderick Stepp, President
of Ridglea Country Club requested that the city investigate and assist in the
correction of an erosion problem on the south golf course of the club.
Staff is investigating the matter and has visited with several interested
citizens in the area to fully understand their concerns. it was noted that one
of their concerns is the erosion of the streambank and concrete rip-rap
protecting the Ridglea Country Club Drive bridge. Staff has investigated
alternatives to the problem and is in the process of initiating a project with
the U.S. Amy Corps of Engineers under Section 14 of the Flood Control Act of
1946. This Act provides assistance toward the correction of erosion problems
related to public facilities. Staff expects that, upon acceptance by the Corps
and funding by the Federal government, a project to stop the erosion at the
bridge will be under construction in approximately six months.
Staff will continue investigating other alternatives with the Corps of Engineers
for the remaining flooding and erosion problems along Mary's Creek, although it
is apparent that there is no easy or inexpensive solution to this problem. Staff
will report back to City Council when more definitive information is available.
