Subject: MARINE SCHOOLHOUSE The City has received a proposal from the Friends of Marine Schoolhouse, Inc. , to relocate the original Marine Schoolhouse to Circle Park. A map of the proposed location is attached. The one story, 20 feet by 30 feet structure was built in 1879 at N.E. 20th Street and North Commerce by M.G. Ellis, and was the first public building in North Fort Worth. In 1906, it was purchased and moved to its present location at 1309 N. Commerce. The Friends of Marine Schoolhouse, Inc. , is a 501c(3) non-profit organization which was formed to receive the Schoolhouse as a gift from its current owner. They plan to raise funds for relocation, restoration, and upkeep of the building. The Friends propose to operate the Schoolhouse as a museum and a classroom in cooperation with Fort Worth Independent School District. All costs related to this proposal would be borne by the Friends. The proposed location, adjacent to the North Branch Library, does not conflict any plans for Circle Park. Any parking requirements would be met by Fort Worth Independent School District property. Staff believes this proposal to be consistent with the history and purpose of Circle Park. The park lies within the conservation district overlay zoning approved by the City Council on November 12, 1991. Unless Council directs otherwise, a lease agreement with the Friends for the Circle Park site will be prepared and brought back to Council for approval after January, 1992. The lease will be for a 15-year term and will place all operations and maintenance costs on the Friends. The Park and Recreation Advisory board endorsed this proposal at their November 19, 199L meeting. In addition, endorsements have been received from Fort Worth Independent School District, the Northside Neighborhood Association, the Historic and Cultural Landmark Commission, the Historic Preservation Council for Tarrant County and others. vory City Manager DI:k ISSUED BY THE CITY MANAGER FORT WORTH, TEXAS 0 111. 4k Rl 5670 20 T" P"l C< V Sri I OPI.
