To the Mayor and Members of the City Council February 2, 1993
Subject: PLACEMENT OF THE SHINTO SHRINE RECEIVED
FROM NAGAOKA, JAPAN
On September 20, 1992, a Shinto Shrine was given to the City of Fort Worth by our sister
city, Nagaoka, Japan. Since then, this very ornate work of art has been temporarily
displayed on the second floor of City Hall outside the Council Chambers.
In October 1992, staff of the.Park and Recreation Department asked the Fort Worth
Botanical Society to consider permanently displaying the shrine in the Japanese Gardens.
On January 13, 1993, the Botanical Society agreed to fund the planning and design of a
protective enclosure for the shrine.
The Botanical Society is also willing to lead an effort to raise private funding for the
construction of the protective enclosure and they have asked for assistance from the City
in this effort. Although the specific location and the type of enclosure have not yet been
determined, a preliminary construction estimate of $25,000 has been established. It is
hoped that these funds could be secured by September 1993, and that construction could
op I be completed shortly thereafter.
Given the above, because of the difficulty involved in moving such a heavy, ornate piece
of art, we plan to continue the temporary display of the shrine at City Hall. Unless City
Council objects, we will pursue this course of action and provide whatever assistance
we can to the Botanical Society in their fund raising effort.
