HomeMy WebLinkAboutIR 7677 INFOR&JAL REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS No. 7677 January 26, 1993 � ,. ►� To the Mayor and Members of the City Council - eX Subject: ADA TRANSITION PLAN STATUS REPORT Tara SUMMARY: On July 21, 1992, the City Council adopted a three-year ADA Transition Plan to make the City's buildings and facilities accessible to persons with disabilities. The Council also allocated one million dollars from the Capital Projects Reserve Fund to pay for implementation of Year One of the plan. Planned Year One modifications include installation of curb-cuts and ramps, provision of accessible parking areas with appropriate signage, and changes in restrooms, elevators and special use areas. BACKGROUND: The following is an update on the progress of Year One projects: ESTIMATED AREA COST STATUS/COMMENTO OOW Curb-Cuts $369,180 The first contract for curb-cuts is expected to be complete by mid-May and includes 101 locations at a total cost of $124,350. The second contract is anticipated to be com- plete in April at a total cost of $135,281 for 136 locations. The third contract will include 100 locations at an estimated total cost of $109,549. Curb-cuts planned at a large number of parks have been removed from the third contract and shifted to Year Two where the work can be combined with the construc- tion of pathways for bidding purpos- es. Restrooms $30,000 Cost projection based on Department of Transportation and Public Work's (T/PW) estimate. This work will be performed as weather permits. Interior Braille Signage $54,000 Sign making equipment is being pur- chased at an estimated cost of $28,000. The remaining cost is for materials and labor. The equipment will be available in March. Replacement of Motion Detectors $20,000 The motion detectors which operate the lights on the third floor of City Hall cause hearing aids to ► malfunction. TJPW will replace with infrared detectors. Braille Printer $ 6,055 A braille printer has been purchased and is available for use by City departments. Library Equipment $37,960 Equipment to be purchased includes low-tech items such as magnifying glasses and large print type writers and high-tech items such as monitor screen enlargers and voice synthe- sizers for the computer card cata- logue. Text Telephones (TTY's or TDD's) $14,400 Twenty-four (24) locations requiring TTY's have been identified. The Electronics Division of Information Systems and Services (ISS) is cur- rently writing specifications for the bid/purchase of this equipment. ISS anticipates that TTY's will be available by April. The cost of these phones is borne by Southwestern Bell. Elevators $ 2,000 Twenty (20) elevators have been modified with braille signs, tele- phones, and audible signals. Work on the final elevator in the ADA Plan is scheduled to begin in mid- January. Assisted Listening Devices $11,000 Devices must be installed at Will Rogers Memorial Center and the Bo- tanic Gardens. These improvements total $579,154; the balance of the fund will be available for both deferred Year One projects and for Year Two work. CONCLUSION: The staff is proceeding with implementation of the Year One activities described above and will also soon begin work on Year Two projects. The ADA year does not coincide with the City's fiscal year, but instead ends each January 26. The City Council will be updated periodically.
