HomeMy WebLinkAboutIR 7719 INFORMAL REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS No. war-o_ "PT 0 L " To the Mayor and Members of the City Council may 11, 1993 Subject: CITY OF FORT WORTH CLEAN CITIES 2000 PROGRAM Clean Cities 2000, Phase I involves implementing a comprehensive municipal recycling and composting program that leads toward achieving the 40 percent recycling goal of SB 1340 and the Clean Texas 2000 goal of 50 to 60 percent reduction in the disposal of solid waste in landfills by the year 2000. On November 17, 1992 (M&C C-13619) , the City Council authorized contracting with the Texas Water Commission (TWC) to allow the City of Fort Worth to receive a $500,000 grant to fund Phase I projects under the Clean Cities 2000 program. Under Phase I the City is required to develop and implement projects that address the following areas: 1. Source Reduction and Reuse 2 . Residential Recycling 3. "Don't Bag It" Lawn Care Program 4 . Backyard Composting 5. Centralized Community Composting 6. Public and Private Workplace Recycling 7. Used Oil Collection 8. Tire Clean-up City staff, working closely with TWC staff and their consultants, developed the City of Fort Worth's Clean Cities 2000 Grant Proposal. A copy of that proposal is attached for your review. All of the projects have been reviewed by TWC and authorization has been given to proceed with implementation. It is anticipated that in the next couple of weeks the City Council will be requested to approve the purchase of materials and equipment required for project implementation. Additionally, a workshop has been scheduled for June 5 at the Fort Worth Botanic 'Garden Conservatory to kickoff the backyard composting demonstration project.
