CITY OF FORT WORTH CLEAN CITIES 2000 PROGRAM
Clean Cities 2000, Phase I involves implementing a comprehensive
municipal recycling and composting program that leads toward achieving
the 40 percent recycling goal of SB 1340 and the Clean Texas 2000 goal
of 50 to 60 percent reduction in the disposal of solid waste in
landfills by the year 2000.
On November 17, 1992 (M&C C-13619) , the City Council authorized
contracting with the Texas Water Commission (TWC) to allow the City of
Fort Worth to receive a $500,000 grant to fund Phase I projects under
the Clean Cities 2000 program. Under Phase I the City is required to
develop and implement projects that address the following areas:
1. Source Reduction and Reuse
2 . Residential Recycling
3. "Don't Bag It" Lawn Care Program
4 . Backyard Composting
5. Centralized Community Composting
6. Public and Private Workplace Recycling
7. Used Oil Collection
8. Tire Clean-up
City staff, working closely with TWC staff and their consultants,
developed the City of Fort Worth's Clean Cities 2000 Grant Proposal. A
copy of that proposal is attached for your review. All of the projects
have been reviewed by TWC and authorization has been given to proceed
with implementation.
It is anticipated that in the next couple of weeks the City Council will
be requested to approve the purchase of materials and equipment required
for project implementation. Additionally, a workshop has been scheduled
for June 5 at the Fort Worth Botanic 'Garden Conservatory to kickoff the
backyard composting demonstration project. It is tentatively scheduled
that the pilot program for centralized community composting begin about
July 12 .
