'071, APRIL 1993 - FORT WORTH CLEAN CITY KEEP AMERICA BEAUTIFUL
MONTH ACTIVITIES
Throughout the year Fort Worth Clean City encourages citizens to improve
the appearance of their neighborhoods by conducting cleanups. Beginning
in 1987 thousands of volunteers throughout Fort Worth have come together
each April to participate in a citywide cleanup. What was initiated by
Fort Worth Clean City in April 1987 as a one day cleanup has expanded
into a month of neighborhood cleanups, an annual community enhancement
project, the annual Corporate Recycling Drive and Corporate Can Crush
and the annual GLAD Bag-A-Thon cleanup day and Trash Bash volunteer
thank you party.
On Saturday, April 24, approximately 6,059 Fort Worth GLAD Bag-A-Thon
volunteers from 240 groups collected more than 302,000 pounds of litter
and debris and 600 tires from public property. This represents more
than 18,000 hours of volunteer time. Not only was the volume of
materials collected more than in 1992, but approximately 1000 more
volunteers participated. Following the GLAD Bag-A-Thon, approximately
450 youth and adults attended the Trash Bash volunteer thank you party
at Trinity Park.
The 1993 community enhancement project is renovating Daggett City Park
and Daggett Elementary School playground. A committee led by Ryan Place
residents brought together representatives of Daggett School, Ryan Place
and Fairmount neighborhood associations, the Mayor's Anti-Graffiti Task
Force, Park and Recreation Department, students, private sector donors
and Fort Worth Clean City. They are turning a vision into reality. A
cleanup of the immediate area was organized and trees, flowers and grass
were planted. Two graffiti covered buildings were painted and asphalt
was removed from the school playground and replaced with child-safe pea
gravel and grass. Through the GLAD cash register receipt program, Fort
Worth Clean City will donate $2,500 to the Daggett Park project for
trees and park furniture.
All of the 1993 activities were well attended and what was accomplished
during the month was impressive. However, the success of these annual
events is measured not only by the tonnage of the debris that is
collected, but also by the way they strengthen positive attitudes and
behavior and promote volunteerism, community pride, and public service.
Appreciation is extended to First Brands Corporation, Kroger Company,
Silver Creek Materials and all of the organizations and individual
volunteers who donated the time, money and materials that made all of
the Fort Worth Clean City Keep America Beautiful Month activities
possible ad the success that they were.
