This cleanup day combined the annual GLAD Bag-A-Thong with the City's second household hazardous waste collection event, both of which were held at the Tandy Center Subway Parking Lot. As expected, the event proved to be a huge success, despite the inclement weather. The GLAD Bag-A-ThonO utilized the services of a record 7,000 community volunteers to collect over 40,000 pounds of trash on April 30. Several groups postponed their cleanups because of the weather, therefore, the total amount of trash collected is yet to be determined. In addition to the trash and debris, approximately 1,010 tires were also collected during the event. At the household hazardous waste collection event, waste was collected from 1,303 vehicles representing 1,593 households. These figures represent a 3% increase over the 1993 event, which was held over the course of a day and a half. The following represents a summary of the recyclable materials collected during the event: Used Oil — ProCycle Oil, Inc., the City's oil recycling contractor, collected approximately 1,700 gallons of used oil. Antifreeze — The City's Equipment Services Division collected approximately 275 gallons of used antifreeze which will be recycled in-house for use in City vehicles. Batteries — Exide Corporation, the City's supplier of automotive batteries, collected 490 lead acid batteries. The firm will recycle any usable plastic and lead. Usable Paint — The Parks and Community Services Department collected 840 one- gallon cans and 6 five-gallon containers of usable paint. This paint will be used in the anti-graffiti program. Fertilizer and Herbicides — The Parks and Community Services Department also collected approximately 1,500 pounds of fertilizer and 300 pounds of herbicide. The fertilizer has already been spread on park land, and the herbicide will be stored for use at the appropriate time. wowwm 9 ffAff I FCFT. WOSPEOMT HR.WOT!"to,1.
