SUBJECT: CITY OF FORT WORTH BACKGROUND CHECK PROCESS
1875
The purpose of this Informal Report is to provide an update on the City's background check process as it
relates to the selection of hires, rehires, promotions, transfers or voluntary demotes through a competitive
hiring process for employment with the City. This process is for General Employees, as Police and Fire Civil
Service are subject to a different process.
The Human Resources (HR) Department requires all candidates that are new hires and rehires of the City
to undergo a background check after an initial contingent job offer is extended. All candidates being
considered for employment with the City must successfully complete a background check that is consistent
and compliant with all applicable employment laws.
The HR Department initiates a background check for all candidates that have formally accepted a job offer
of employment with the City. Internal candidates (active employees) that applied for a position through a
competitive hiring process will undergo a new background check if their previous check exceeds a two-year
timeframe, except for employees of the Parks and Recreation Department (PARD). Human Resources
requires all PARD candidates, including internal employees or external hires, to undergo and successfully
complete a background check, regardless of the timing of their most recent check. This requirement for
PARD employees is based on the nature of the position, which involves potential interaction with children
and other sensitive populations.
The background check process includes the following:
• Social Security Verification
• Address Trace
• 7- year State and County Criminal Record Check
• 7- year National Criminal History Database Search
• Sex and Violent Offender Registry Search
• Motor Vehicle Record and Driver's License Check
The HR Department strives to ensure that candidates selected for a position with the City are properly vetted
by a background check to ensure the City is hiring the most qualified and suitable candidates for
employment.
