SOUTHWEST COAEVfUNITY PARK UPDATE Page 1 of I
-0XX'- Subject:
On May 7, 1996, (I.R. No. 7999) Parks and Community Services Department (PACSD) staff
presented an update on the Southwest Community Park and Athletic Complex project site selection
and assessment process. At that time, three (3) options were presented to the City Council
A. Amending the current grant proposal under consideration by the Texas Parks and
Wildlife Department to use a different site and accept the overage of land
acquisition costs.
B. Amending the current grant proposal using a different site and reducing the amount
of acreage to meet the proposed acquisition cost.
C. Withdrawing the grant proposal and resubmitting the proposal during a future grant
.cycle to include a different site in closer proxirnity to developed areas. This option
included the possibility of purchasing the proposed site, placing the land in a trust
for future grant matching purposes.
Staff recommended that option "C" be pursued.
The City Council directed that the current grant proposal be withdrawn and that a meeting be
convened with residents in City Council District 6 to solicit input on the most desired site.
On June 17, 1996, a meeting was held involving various homeowner associations and athletic
association representatives in City Council District 6 and the southwest portion of the City,
respectively. At this meeting, a majority of those present expressed their desire that the Southwest
Community Park site be acquired in the general area of South Hulen Road and Risinger Road.
Unless directed otherwise, PACSD staff will initiate acquisition proceedings for land in this area.
Should the City Council have any questions regarding this matter, please feel free to contact
Richard Zavala, Director, Parks and Community Services Department or me.
