JX Subject: AFFILIATION AGREEMENT FOR PUBLIC HEALTH
STUDENT ROTATIONS
The Fort Worth Public Health Department and the University of North Texas Health
Science Center at Fort Worth (UNT-HSC) are now official partners in educating future
public health professionals.
On October 5, 1998, an agreement was signed that establishes a contractual
relationship between UNT-HSC and the City of Fort Worth for the Public Health
Department to serve as an educational site for the UNT-HSC Graduate School of
Biomedical Sciences. Neither the City of Fort Worth nor UNT-HSC will incur additional
costs as a result of this agreement.
As part of the agreement, the Fort Worth Public Health Department will serve as an
educational site for student field studies. These rotations will involve students' assisting
Fort Worth Public Health Department staff members in their work as health educators,
inspectors, epidemiologists, and other positions. Several UNT-HSC students completed
their required field studies prior to the agreement, and now this contract creates a
stronger foundation for those rotations by appointing a Public Health Department staff
person to coordinate students' activities while they are studying at the Public Health
Department.
UNT-HSC and the City of Fort Worth will now coordinate training opportunities that will
enhance the education of the public health students.
The relationship gives the City of Fort Worth closer ties to UNT-HSC's research efforts
and academic public health expertise. This enhanced access will strengthen Fort
Worth's future applications for outside funding to support public health activities.
During the past year, UNT-HSC and the Fort Worth Public Health Department have
continued to expand their collaborative activities. In April 1998, they were among the
agencies that helped plan the Texas Commissioner of Health's visit to Fort Worth during
Public Health Week. This event served as the kick-off to other activities, including
educational exhibits at Main St. Fort Worth Arts Festival, the Tarrant County Race for
the Cure, and Earth Week activities at the Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base. Referrals for
speaking engagements and media interviews are also shared between the two
agencies.
This formal agreement with UNT-HSC is just one more example of how the Public
Health Department is working toward creating a healthier Fort Worth.
