HomeMy WebLinkAboutIR 8516 INFORMAL REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS NO. 8516 Date: August 12, 2003 To the Mayor and Members of the City Council Page 1 of 1 SUBJECT: Downtown Street Changes yrfa At the November 19, 2002 Pre-Council meeting, staff provided City Council with an over view of the various recommendations from the Downtown Access and Circulation Study. Significant street changes from one-way to two-way operations have been implemented around the Convention Center and others are still planned for the Downtown Area. Beginning August 14, 2003 Commerce Street from 4'h Street to 9h Street will have various lane closures in order to accommodate pavement resurfacing and striping. New traffic signals will be installed as required for the planned street change, The Transportation and Public Works Department will change traffic flow on Commerce Street from 4h Street to 9th Street from one-way to two-way operations on August 17, 2003. Other streets in the downtown area will also be resurfaced in August and some lanes may be closed during construction. The boundaries of the resurfacing program is: Belknap (north), Lancaster(south), Jones (east) and Henderson (west). Traffic control will be provided during the work. The public information program for the street change includes: • City Page articles • Letters mailed to adjacent property owners • Flyers distributed to businesses along Commerce Street from 4h to 9th Street • Electronic message board for motorists will be located on Commerce Street (south of 9`h) Other recommendations from the Study items are currently underway include: 1. Taylor Street plans are underway to change the street operations north of Sixth Street. This street will be part of the Downtown resurfacing program for this summer. 2. A Parking Ordinance is being prepared to provide consistency for passenger and loading zones; establish new parking meter time limits and rates; and prohibit meter feeding. This ordinance should be submitted to City Council this Fall.
