x+ SUBJECT: DOWNTOWN STREET RESURFACING
Within the last several years, the pavement condition of many streets in downtown was compromised
due to the unusually high volume of street cuts resulting from utility deregulation. In response,
Transportation and Public Works staff developed a three-year plan to resurface streets in the Central
Business District.
The 2003 portion of the plan includes four components. in April, streets around the Fort Worth
Convention Center were resurfaced and traffic patterns changed from one-way to two-way traffic by
Transportation and Public Works crews. In September, a portion of the downtown streets received a
microsurfacing treatment that was done by contract. Currently, designated streets are receiving an
asphalt overlay and this portion of the project will be complete in October. Finally, brick streets will
be repaired by a contract that is anticipated to begin in October.
Because of the importance of maintaining business and an optimum traffic flow in the Central
"business District, city and contract crews have worked on weekends or at night. Prior to the start of
-orris project, staff worked closely with Downtown Fort Worth, Inc. and local business owners to provide
information and gain feedback from the businesses about the City's plan to resurface streets. At this
time, staff has received favorable feedback and any concerns are being addressed immediately.
The 2004 portion of the resurfacing plan is currently being prepared and staff anticipates that
implementation will begin in the spring and summer of 2004.
