HomeMy WebLinkAboutIR 8236 INFORMAL REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS No. 8236 00—AT!,� March 21 , 2000 , To the Mayor and Members of the City Council �t Subject: GREAT AMERICAN CLEANUP 2000 in FORT WORTH BACKGROUND For the past fifteen years the City of Fort Worth has participated in the Great American Cleanup Campaign. The City's Solid Waste Management (SWM) Division, under the auspices of its award winning "Fort Worth Clean & Green" Program, is responsible for coordinating this initiative in Fort Worth. The Great American Cleanup, a nationwide initiative led by Keep America. Beautiful, Inc., will run from mid-March through the end of April, and is expected to involve more than 10,000 communities in 35 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Canada. Its mission: to make the communities cleaner and more beautiful places in which to live. The Fort Worth campaign will include: neighborhood cleanups, litter removal campaigns, illegal dump cleanups, recycling initiatives, and intensified code enforcement including removal of junk vehicles. The "Glad Bag" Company is another significant member of this partnership. They provide the SWM Division with free litter bags that Fort Worth Clean & Green distributes to neighborhood and other groups willing to participate in cleanups. r 1 COMPONENTS OF FORT WORTH'S ANNUAL SPRING CLEANUP • Fort Worth Clean & Green will coordinate the city-wide effort that last year included 3,471 registered volunteers. Neighborhood organizations, schools, civic groups, businesses, youth groups and others will be involved in this intensified effort to clean up Fort Worth. • "rhe City's SWM Division will conduct blitzes in one council district each week beginning in District 2 on March 6-10 and finishing with District 9 the week of April 24-28. These blitzes will consist of intensified efforts to remove litter and junk vehicles; cleanup illegal dumping; and an increased effort to enforce solid waste codes. Residents will be encouraged to clean up their property and place materials at the curb during this week for an extra effort by brush and bulky waste collection crews. • The City will allow Fort Worth residents and volunteers to bring materials free of charge to the City's landfill. The City's solid waste contractor, Waste Management of Fort Worth, is another significant partner in this overall effort. They will place roll-off containers at eleven strategic locations in Fort Worth each week-end, beginning March 4 and running through April 30, to allow citizens an easy disposal option. • Fort Worth Clean & Green will conduct two "Super Saturdays", April 8 and 29. Staff will be there to distribute bags, pass out educational materials and to provide refreshments. The Department of Environmental Management's "CRUD CRUISER" will be there so residents can recycle their household chemical wastes. • The Corporate Sector is involved with a massive effort in April where employees and other volunteers will conduct litter cleanups at various locations throughout the City. • The City's SWM Division will be coordinating collection of discarded tires and bags of litter oil from campaign efforts. The staff and all of our City's volunteers are predicting another great effort this year. The staff will keep the City Council abreast of this year's progress and opportunities for involvement.
