� Subject: FORT WORTH SPRING CLEANUP - 2001

For the past seventeen years the City of Fort Worth has participated in the Great American
Cleanup Campaign. The City's Solid Waste Management (SWM) Division, under the auspices
of its "Keep Fort Worth Beautiful" Program, is responsible for coordinating this initiative in Fort
Worth.
The Great American Cleanup is a nationwide initiative led by Keep America Beautiful. Each
spring, more than 10,000 communities in 35 states participate in this effort. The program's
mission is to make communities cleaner and more beautiful places in which to live. The Fort
Worth campaign includes: neighborhood cleanups, litter removal campaigns, illegal dump
cleanups, recycling initiatives, and intensified code enforcement including removal of junk
vehicles. The SWM Division promotes these initiatives throughout the year, but during the
spring an additional level of effort is expended. This year's campaign (March 3 — April 29) was
very successful. Some of the measurements of the success of the initiative includes:
Neighborhood Cleanups:
• Neighborhood Volunteers* 1,833
• Bags of Litter Collected by Volunteers 4,316
* There were a lot more volunteers
that participated, but did not register
with the City's Program Coordinator.
City of Fort Worth Effort:
* Illegal Dump Sites Cleaned 194
• Pounds of Materials Removed 3,444,000
• Illegally Dumped Tires Collected 9,321
• Solid Waste Code Violation Notices Issued 61
• Participants in Educational Outreach 3,623
• Citizens Bringing Materials to Mobile 70
Hazardous Mobile Collection Vehicle

Waste Management Inc. (contractor):

Drop-Off Sites
The partnership between the staff and community volunteers has made this program a success.
