SUBJECT: COMMUNTlY MEETNGS FOR ADAPTIVE REUSE OF MODERN
ART MUSEUM FACILITY
Background:
In 1999, the operators of the Modern Art Museum began construction on a new facility and notified
the City of their intent to terminate their lease with the City in 2002. The Fort Worth Arts Center,
which currently houses the Modern Art Museum and the Scott Theater, is owned by -the City of Fort
Worth and has been leased to the Fort Worth Art Association for the Modern Art Museum and the
Scott Theater since 1971.
With museum renovations and expansions in the Cultural District, it became apparent that there is
an opportunity for reuse of the Fort Worth Arts Center. Therefore, in January 2000, Mayor Barr
appointed a committee of City Councilmembers, arts and community leaders to look at the existing
City-owned facility and make recommendations for its future use.
The committee determined that it was necessary to engage a consultant to look at community needs
and the City's options for reuse. On March 6, 2001, the City Council approved M&C C-18491,
authorizing the City Manager to execute a professional services agreement with Herbert Sprouse
Consulting to conduct a feasibility study for the adaptive reuse of the Fort Worth Arts Center.
Consultant Feasibility Study:
The feasibility study will be focused around six major tasks.
• Collect pertinent information through a review of documentation, direct interviews, survey
research and public forums
• Evaluate the building for possible uses and major constraints
• Develop case studies to illustrate potential model facilities
• Recommend programmatic use and identify users
• Identify sources of funding for programs and operations
• Recommend a management structure
Community Meetings:
As a component of the first task, a series of public meetings have been planned to gather imeaningful
information from the public about their needs and interests. The community meetings will be chaired by
Mayor Pro-tem Ralph McCloud and facilitated by Herbert Sprouse. Participants will be asked to respond
to the following questions.
• Do you know of an arts or cultural organization that has important space needs?
let" • Do you know a group that could benefit from a performance or exhibition location in the Cultural
District?
• Can you think of other arts and cultural uses for this important building?
