During budget deliberations staff recommended that these funds be utilized to contract out mowing and litter pick-up at approximately 45 additional park sites. Outsourcing will allow existing staff previously assigned to these tasks to conduct more frequent maintenance in the parks during the mowing season (March-October). Enhanced maintenance of parks will take place in neighborhood, community and regional parks. Prioritization of tasks and projects will be based on level of usage. Examples of maintenance to be performed include more frequent cleaning of shelters and picnic tables, enhanced maintenance of playground safety surfaces and detail cleaning of parking lots. In addition, park staff will be able to increase the mowing frequency of community centers from 14 to 7 day cycles and provide more frequent cleaning of landscape beds. As a result of the budget freeze, implementation of this program was delayed; however, pursuant to the City Manager's recommendation on February 19, 2002 newly funded programs and projects have been authorized to move forward. Unless the City Council has any objections, staff will proceed with implementation of the Enhanced Park Maintenance Program as described above. Should you have any questions related to this matter, please contact Richard Zavala, Parks and Community Services Director or Joe Paniagua, Assistant City Manager.
