Crime scats show a significant reduction in gang violence and the number of victims in the community. Over that past several years the Gang Section has observed a change in the trend of violent gang crime. Previously violent gang crime has been driven by competition between opposing gangs. This accounted for the drive-by shootings that were regular news in years past. More recently violent crimes between gangs have become less frequent. Recorded violent offenses are occurring more often between members of the same gang, and are not based on neighborhood, territory or competition. The primary reason for the reduction in violence is that gang members are moving toward crimes that are more profit oriented. This statement is based on discoveries made during long term investigations and the statistical increase in weapons and drug arrests among documented gang members. Gang Section enforcement officers work closely with the Narcotics Unit and our detectives and Criminal Intelligence Unit officers are teamed up with federal agencies (DEA, FBI, ATF, Homeland Security Investigations) in an attempt to have a greater impact on the larger gang organizations over the long term.
