HomeMy WebLinkAboutIR 8534 INFORMAL REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS No. 8534 Ir.11111 October 14, 2003 To the Mayor and Members of the City Council SUBJECT: YOUTH SPORTS PROGRAM OPPORTUNITIES This informal report is in response to questions raised about the city's Youth Sports program during the Pre-Council meeting on September 23, 2002. Discussion centered on opportunities for participation citywide and staff was asked to provide information on venues, locations of outreach and program accessibility. The Parks and Community Services Department, in conjunction with the Youth Sports Council of Fort Worth, Inc. (YSCFW, Inc.) offers youth the opportunity to participate in many sports throughout the year. Sports offered include basketball (2 seasons), soccer (2 seasons), baseball, softball and volleyball, Teams are organized through the individual community centers and are then transported to other participating community centers around the city to engage in competition with other teams. Community Centers involved include Como, Diamond Hill, Fire Station, Greenbriar, Handley Meadowbrook, Highland Hills, Hillside, Martin Luther King, Northside, North-Tri Ethnic, R.D. Evans, Riverside, Southwest, Sycamore, Thomas Place and Worth Heights. A Zip Code accounting of articipants and a map of community centers is attached for your information. 0'p I'll A majority of basketball and volleyball games are played at Handley Meadowbrook, Bertha Coll,ins, Highland Hills, Fire Station, Worth Heights, Greenbriar and Southwest Community Centers and Haws Athletic Center. Soccer and baseball games are played at the recently completed Youth Sports Athletic Complex at Sycamore Park. In response to Councilmember Haskin's questions concerning youth sports opportunities in Council District 4, this program is provided at Riverside Community Center, located in Sylvania Park. Riverside Community Center hosted 11 youth sports teams and 129 youth during FY 02-03. Handley Meadowbrook Community Center, located approximately one mile south of 130 at 820 E, hosted 170 youth from zip codes located in District 4. Outreach efforts include flyers to all children grades 1-8 through the school system, visitation to PTA meetings, website of YSCFW, Inc., and announcement through, the community centers. This outreach effort ensures -the opportunity for participation citywide.
