HomeMy WebLinkAboutIR 8564 INFORMAL REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS No- 8564 January 26, 2004 To the Mayor and Members of the City Council Page 1 of 1 $� SUBJECT: CODE RANGERS PROGRAM The City Council approved funding for the Code Rangers Program in the FY 03-04 Code Compliance Department budget for the purpose of increasing citizen involvement in code enforcement. The Code Rangers Program will provide for recruiting, training and empowering of citizen volunteers to identify and report code violations in their neighborhoods. These volunteers will serve as extra "eyes and ears" for the Code Compliance Department and therefore improve the overall effectiveness of Fort Worth code enforcement services.. The current status of the program is as follows: • The Department has formed a task force to provide strategic planning and guide the implementation of the program. • The Department has completed recruitment and hiring of the three Code Enforcement Officer positions that were added in the FY 03-04 budget. The Officers are currently entering the new Officers' training program. • The Department.is presently developing the training materials and standard operating procedures for the program. • The target date for kickoff of the Code Rangers Program is March 15, 2004. The program will start with the training of its first group of volunteers. • The Department has met with the Police Department to establish and promote cooperation and collaboration with the Code Blue Program. To date, meetings have been held with the Police Chief and his Command staff. Staff will continue to work with the Police Department to insure collaboration between the two programs. • The Department has made a number of presentations on Code Rangers to neighborhood organizations, including the League of Neighborhoods, C.A.C. groups and several neighborhood associations. The Department will continue presentations to inform our citizens and to receive their feedback. The Department will also meet with an advisory group composed of members of the League of Neighborhoods. We will keep the Council informed on the program's progress through future reports as needed.
