SUBJECT: NAMING THE NORTH ANIMAL CAMPUS IN HONOR OF HENRY
This report provides information regarding a request to formally rename the North Animal Campus as
Henry's Animal Campus, in honor of Henry, the long-time canine ambassador of Fort Worth Animal
Care & Control.
The North Animal Campus currently operates without a formal name designation. Following the
recent passing of Henry, Fort Worth Animal Care & Control's official canine ambassador, a request
was submitted to consider formally naming the campus Henry's Animal Campus in recognition of his
extraordinary service to the City and its animal welfare mission.
Henry played a unique and highly visible role in Fort Worth's animal welfare efforts, serving for more
than 12 years as the City's official canine ambassador for Fort Worth Animal Care & Control.
Rescued in 2011 as a thin and ailing stray, Henry was nursed back to health by shelter staff and went
on to become a powerful symbol of the value of lifesaving shelter work. As a working canine
ambassador, Henry accompanied City leadership to local and national events, traveled with the
Mayor, visited veterans in nursing homes, and spent hundreds of hours with thousands of children in
schools, summer programs, and community events across Fort Worth. His calm demeanor, gentle
disposition, and consistent presence helped humanize shelter operations and foster trust between the
community and the City's animal welfare system.
During a period when public shelters nationwide were facing overcrowding and high euthanasia rates,
Henry served as a living example of what positive outcomes could look like. Through his outreach
and fundraising efforts, Henry helped support the raising of nearly $5 million to advance critical
animal welfare infrastructure, including the construction of the City's first -of -its -kind Medical
Treatment Ward for sick and injured animals and later contributed to broader efforts that supported
funding for a modern animal shelter. His legacy is closely tied to Fort Worth's progress in animal
welfare, including sustained improvements in live release rates and recognition as one of the nation's
most pet -friendly cities.
City Council has previously established procedures governing the naming of City -owned facilities,
including requirements for Council consideration and documentation of an individual's contributions.
The request to rename the North Animal Campus as Henry's Animal Campus aligns with those
procedures and reflects recognition of sustained, citywide impact and public service.
