SUBJECT: DUTY HOURS OF NEIGHBORHOOD POLICE OFFICERS (NPOs)
The purpose of this Informal Report is to provide an update regarding the duty hours of the Fort
Worth Police Department's Neighborhood Police Officers (NPOs).
Role and Standard Dutv Hours
A primary responsibility of a Neighborhood Police Officer (NPO) is to promote the principles of
community policing by actively engaging with neighborhood residents, businesses, and other
community stakeholders. Through these efforts, the NPO serves as a direct link between the
community and the police department. Although these are the primary duties of an NPO, other
department needs may require NPO resources be deployed elsewhere within the city. The
standard duty hours of an NPO are 8:00 a.m. — 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Standard
work schedules may vary slightly depending on the characteristics of the NPO's assigned beat,
including whether the area is primarily residential, commercial, industrial, or an entertainment
district.
Schedule Flexibilitv
The NPO position requires a high degree of schedule flexibility, with work hours frequently
adjusted to meet the evolving needs of the community. The role emphasizes the development of
strong community partnerships, education, and engagement, and often involves the use of non-
traditional methods to achieve sustainable, long-term solutions.
