Role and Standard Dutv Hours A primary responsibility of a Neighborhood Police Officer (NPO) is to promote the principles of community policing by actively engaging with neighborhood residents, businesses, and other community stakeholders. Through these efforts, the NPO serves as a direct link between the community and the police department. Although these are the primary duties of an NPO, other department needs may require NPO resources be deployed elsewhere within the city. The standard duty hours of an NPO are 8:00 a.m. — 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Standard work schedules may vary slightly depending on the characteristics of the NPO's assigned beat, including whether the area is primarily residential, commercial, industrial, or an entertainment district. Schedule Flexibilitv The NPO position requires a high degree of schedule flexibility, with work hours frequently adjusted to meet the evolving needs of the community. The role emphasizes the development of strong community partnerships, education, and engagement, and often involves the use of non- traditional methods to achieve sustainable, long-term solutions. Common Reasons for Schedule Adiustments • Attendance at evening or weekend meetings and events, including: o Neighborhood Homeowner's Association (HOA) or Neighborhood Association (NA) meetings o Code Blue meetings or training sessions o Community Events (e.g., parades, crime prevention fairs, National Night Out) o Police Athletic League programs and events • Participation in special operations to address crime trends • Coverage during holidays requiring increased public safety staffing, such as: o July 3rd/4tn o New Year's Eve • Response to recurring quality -of -life issues or community complaints • Support during public order events • Conduct nighttime Crime Free Multi -Housing inspections Additional questions or information requests should be directed to DC Ricks at 817-392-3654.
