RESCINDING THE HONORARY DESIGNATION OF STATE HIGHWAY 183
(NE AND NW 28TH STREET) FROM BEACH STREET TO BUSINESS 287
(NORTH MAIN STREET) IN RECOGNITION OF CÉSAR CHÁVEZ
WHEREAS, on January 14th, 2020, pursuant to Resolution No. 5177-01-2020, the City Council designated
State Highway 183 (NE and NW 28th Street) from Beach Street to Business 287 (North Main Street) in recognition
of César Chávez, and State Highway 183 (NW 28th Street and Ephriham Avenue) from Business 287 (North Main
Street) to State Highway 199 in recognition of Dolores Huerta;
WHEREAS, these honorary designations were made based on the honorees’ collective efforts to build a
foundation for establishing community organizing, environmentalism, civil rights, activism, and education in
Texas and throughout the United States; and
WHEREAS, honorary designations by the City Council are not only ceremonial, but also reflections of the
City’s values; and
WHEREAS, recent allegations regarding César Chávez have raised serious and credible concerns within the
community that are not reflective of the City’s values; and
WHEREAS, allowing an honorary designation to remain despite these concerns would weaken the integrity
of the City’s process and erode public trust; and
WHEREAS the honorary designation for Dolores Huerta remains appropriate, meaningful, and aligned with
the City’s values and preserving her designation affirms the City’s recognition of her positive impact;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
FORT WORTH, TEXAS THAT:
1. The portion of Resolution No. 5177-01-2020 designating State Highway 183 (NE and NW 28th
Street) from Beach Street to Business 287 (North Main Street) in recognition of César Chávez is
rescinded;
2. The portion of Resolution No. 5177-01-2020 designating State Highway 183 (NW 28th Street and
Ephriham Avenue) from Business 287 (North Main Street) to State Highway 199 in recognition
of Dolores Huerta remains intact; and
3. The City Manager is authorized to take all appropriate measures and execute any necessary
documents in conjunction with the Texas Department of Transportation to effectuate this
Resolution.
