SUBJECT: UPDATE ON PROJECT SAFE NEIGHBORHOODS EXPANDED
AREAS
The purpose of this informal report is to provide an update on the Project Safe Neighborhoods
project (PSN) and the addition of a second designated area encompassing parts of Central and
South Division.
Project Safe Neighborhoods is a federally funded initiative that provides grant funding to local law
enforcement and non-profit organizations for enhanced enforcement and community intervention
programs. Led locally by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Texas, the goal of
PSN is to create safer neighborhoods and to reduce gun and gang violence by using a
collaborative, intelligence -led, problem -solving approach to crime prevention.
Each year, the Project Safe Neighborhoods committee evaluates violent crime data, including but
not limited to, calls for service and data from the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network
(NIBIN). In 2025, the PSN committee evaluated the previous year's violent crime and NIBIN data,
as a result of this evaluation, the committee chose to maintain the East Division PSN area and
designate an additional PSN area in Central and South Division along the I-35 corridor (see
attached PSN map). The additional PSN area allows the committee to allocate resources to a
greater area of the city in an intelligent, data -driven manner.
For 2026, the United States Attorney's Office, the Bureau of Alcohol Tabaco and Firearms (ATF),
and the Fort Wort Police Department (FWPD) formed a PSN task force incorporating resources
and representation from the US Attorney's Office, the ATF, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA),
The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), The United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS),
The Texas Department of Public Safety, FWPD, and the Tarrant County District Attorney's Office.
This task force meets weekly to discuss reactive and proactive investigations related to violent
crimes in the PSN areas, evaluates available resources, and determines the best course of action
for each investigation.
In addition to enforcement and investigative efforts, community -based prevention strategies
remain a critical component of the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative. One Safe Place serves
as both the fiscal agent and a key community partner for the PSN project, supporting coordination
of resources and implementation of violence prevention programming. As part of these efforts, a
beautification project at the MLK Community Center was completed in September 2025,
enhancing the physical environment to deter crime and promote positive community engagement
through principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). Building on this
work, partners are currently developing the Roots of Hope project, a collaborative initiative to
create a reading trail and community garden in the Historic Southside neighborhood. This project
is expected to be completed in fall 2026 and is designed to further reduce crime opportunities,
increase neighborhood visibility, and foster community pride.

Also, part of the PSN, the US Attorney's Office conducts a reentry program for convicted felons
that is focused on reducing recidivism. Members of law enforcement and non-profit community
programs emphasize the consequences of reoffending and provide education on programs that
are available to help those offenders become successful and productive members of society.
