SUBJECT: OFFICER INVOLVED ACCIDENTS RELATED TO VEHICLE PURSUITS - CHRIS
DANIELS, POLICE ASSISTANT CHIEF

TO THE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL
The purpose of this Informal Report is to respond to an inquiry pertaining to Officer-Involved
Accidents related to pursuits in the last 24 months, including injuries, and potential
technology that can assist with pursuits.
From April 1, 2024, through April 1, 2026, the Fort Worth Police Department recorded 409
vehicle pursuits:
• 148 of these pursuits resulted in vehicle accidents.
o Of those 148 accidents; 48 resulted in non-fatal injuries to total of 63 people:
▪ 7 officers
▪ 33 fleeing suspects
▪ 17 passengers in suspect vehicles
▪ 6 completely uninvolved motorists.
The injuries ranged from complaints of pain, to significant injuries, such as fractures and
internal injuries.
Technology solutions currently being used to assist and prevent pursuits include rapid
communication between police units, city owned pan tilt zoom cameras and Real-Time
Crime Center intervention, tire deflation devices and Police Air Support.
Furthermore, in January 2026, the Police Department implemented a new pursuit driving
course for officers that focuses on departmental policy compliance and liability.
Technology and tactics we are currently exploring and or testing are GPS tagging of fleeing
vehicles, the Grappler system, tactical vehicle intervention and a drone as a first responder
program.
2 of 2 Our goal is to utilize Real Time Crime Center assets, technology and industry approved
tactics and best practices to minimize the need for active pursuits while increasing our ability
to actively track fleeing suspects, and stolen vehicles. The end result will be better tactics,
better training and a safer Fort Worth.
