SUPPORTING THE DESIGNATION OF THE CHISHOLM AND
GREAT WESTERN TRAILS AS NATIONAL HISTORIC TRAILS
WHEREAS the national Trail System Act of 1968 established the National Trail
System ("NTS"), the purpose of which is to provide for the ever-increasing outdoor
recreational needs of an expanding population and to promote the preservation of, public
access to, travel within, and enjoyment and appreciation of outdoor areas and historic
resources of the United States;
WHEREAS the NTS is composed of four types of trails, one of which is National
Historic Trails that follow travel routes of national historic significance;
WHEREAS the Chisholm and the Great Western Trails are of local, state and
national significance as they were the two primary trails used by Texas ranchers and
contractors to move cattle from Texas to various Midwestern and Great Plains states
from the 1850s to the 1880s;
WHEREAS the development and use of these two trails played an important role
in the economic recovery of Texas and other western states following the Civil War and
played a fundamental role in the development of Fort Worth and its western heritage;
WHEREAS on March 30, 2009, the U.S. Congress passed legislation that was
signed by President Obama calling for a federal feasibility study of the Chisholm and
Great Western Trails for potential listing as National Historic Trails;
WHEREAS the trail boundaries will be determined by the National Park Service
through further research, and the National Historic Trail designation is anticipated to
have minimal or no impact on properties that fall within those boundaries;
WHEREAS the designation of the Chisholm and Great Western Trails as National
Historic Trails has the potential to positively contribute to heritage tourism in Fort
Worth; and
WHEREAS on February 9, 2015, the Historic and Cultural Landmarks
Commission adopted a resolution recommending that the City Council support the
designation of the Chisholm and Great Western Trails as National Historic Trails;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS:
That the City of Fort Worth supports the designation of the Chisholm and Great
Western Trails as National Historic Trails, as depicted in Exhibit A.
