The Latino Americans: 500 Years of History grant is provided by the National Endowment for the
Humanities (NEH)and the American Library Association (ALA) as part of an NEH initiative - The Common
Good: Humanities in the Public Square. The grant's purpose is to help fund facilitated discussions and
programming in communities about the long and fascinating history of Latinos in the United States. One
integral component and public programming cornerstone of the grant is the screening of the PBS
documentary series LATINO AMERICANS, a production of WETA Washington, DC: Bosh and Co. Inc.,
and Latino Public Broadcasting (LPB). This documentary details the Latino struggles against segregation,
poverty, racial violence, discrimination, exploitation and other injustices.
This grant opportunity ties in with the Fort Worth Human Relation Commission's (FWHRC) Movies That
Matter: A Human Rights Film Series initiative. If awarded the grant, the FWHRC, Modern Art Museum,
Fort Worth Public Library, Texas Christian University, Arles De La Rosa and other community partners will
work collaboratively to implement the grant with the purpose of:
• Bringing awareness of Latino American histories and cultures to new audiences;
• Engaging the Fort Worth community in examining and documenting the histories of Latino
Americans in their communities; and
• Fostering understanding of local histories in regional, national and international contexts.
